Georgia and Wine
Georgia is considered to be the motherland of wine-making, being supported by the archeological findings. Material evidence found by archeologists like grape stones are researched to be 7 000 years old. Ancient marani (a place for storing wine), qvevri (a huge clay can covered with ground used for filling with wine), gold, silver and bronze bowls are also discovered by them in the territory of Georgia. This give reason to a great part of the world’s competent experts to believe, that Georgia is the wine homeland.
There are about 500 local vine species in Georgia. 38 varieties among them are officially grown for commercial viticulture. The most special Georgian vine species are Rkatsiteli, Saperavi, Mtsvane, Tetra, Alexandrouli, Tsolikauri etc. Various methods developed through centuries are realized in producing table dry, naturally sweet, semi-sweet, dessert and sparkling wine types.
